“If God created everything,” my 9 year old asks imploringly from the backseat, “then who created God?”
“God doesn’t have a creator,” I explained. “Because He has always been, and He will always be. He has no beginning, and He has no end.” I replied, patting myself on the back for my recollection of the good ole’ Baltimore Catechism.
“But I don’t understand,” she protests. “Someone had to make him first. Did he just make Himself?”
“You have to remember, we live in time,” I go on. “God does not live in time; He lives outside of time. He is bigger than time. Remember, no beginning and no end. That is eternal.”
This is a really deep conversation to have with a 9 year old, and for now at least, she dropped the subject.
But, as we continued down the road, I thought more about the timeline of God, and the way in which I try to box him in with my limited, human perspective:
- This is so unimportant. God doesn’t care about that, and I’d be silly to waste His time praying for it.
- God could never forgive that.
- If only I were more holy, attended mass more regularly, stopped (fill in the blank here), then God would love me more.
- I’m too fat (or skinny, or tired) to serve God.
- If I had more kids, I’d be a better Catholic.
- If I had more (or less) money, I’d be a better servant.
These are just some of the thoughts that have actually entered my mind throughout my faith life, and the reality is that every single one of these thoughts reveals that in my heart, I too am trying to confine God to a human timeline, human thoughts and the box that I believe He belongs in.
But, He is bigger than that. Ephesians 3:20 (NAB) says, “Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us.”
Read that again, slowly. He is able to accomplish FAR MORE than you can ask or even imagine. His dream for you is bigger than the dream you have for yourself. His plan for you is greater. His love for you is infinite.
So today, dear reader, take God out of the box you have put him in. He is truly eternal, outside of time, outside of our human understanding. His is the power that is at work within you.
